Daigo Town forest cultivation efforts
The inhabitants of Daigo Town have been nurturing its forests over a long period of time. In fact, forest cultivation takes no less than half a century. Forestry is a long term endeavor, passed on from parent to child to their children and on, from generation to generation. This also requires a massive amount of energy and constant repetitive work many times over. These efforts serve not only to create Yamizo lumber used in our daily lives, but also produce the broad cycle of felling, using, planting, and nurturing.
Planting elite trees and fast growing trees
Using the town's own forest area, planting of elite trees and fast growing trees is performed together with forestry workers and local high school students enrolled in forestry courses.
Elite trees…This term describes 2nd and further generation trees chosen from crossbred seedlings of seieiju trees (1st generation) selected from each mountain region which proved especially excellent.
Reduction of costs and labor via drone utilization
Drones are used (photography and orthorectification) to perform measurements of planting areas, etc. originally performed by manpower (field investigation). Seedlings that were once transported by humans from car-accessible areas to planting sites are transported by drone.
Utilization of remote sensing techniques
By using CS 3D imaging, past aerial photos, and forest diagrams, border estimations are made from maps attached to old ledgers.
Conducting study sessions with local forestry enterprises
To promote local forestry, young workers from several forestry businesses hold regular study and research sessions with the town and others.
Securing future torchbearers and sharing the importance of forest maintenance
Daigo Town is committed to public awareness, holding events that parents can attend with children to play and learn through hands-on interaction with trees.
